History – Situated in the core of downtown Buffalo, 298 Main Street was first developed by Dr. James Platt White in 1881 – an eminent citizen who was influential in the creation of the University of Buffalo School of Medicine. The “original” White Building, as it was then known, was 7 stories tall and the first fireproof building in Buffalo. In 1905, Dr. White’s widow, Mary Anna White, replaced the original building with the current structure – the “new” White Building (now called The Main and Cathedral Building). Designed by the renowned architecture and structural engineering firm of R.J. Reidpath and Sons, it is constructed from concrete and brick and fronts both Main Street and Cathedral Park. The building’s architecture is quietly elegant, blending the symmetry of Georgian Architecture with Italian Renaissance design elements such as stone dentil cornices.
